About Dry Freight Truck Loads

An enclosed trailer must be used for shipping dry freight. 48’ and 53’ trailers are the most common dimensions used for this type of shipping, though smaller trailers may be used when the situation demands. Freight examples include

  • Non-perishable foods
  • Beverages
  • Consumables
  • Building materials
  • Clothing
  • Various retail goods

The Difference between LTL and FTL Shipping

LTL stands for “less than truckload,” which means that a customer has a load which doesn’t take up an entire dry van. Rather than wait until there’s enough freight to justify a full load, these clients will look for a carrier who’s willing to take their load along with others to make their trip profitable. While LTL may cost more pallet-for-pallet, it can be a profitable good choice for many shippers and carriers to be open to LTL loads, especially when you have a good dry freight broker on your side helping you find and get the best loads at fair prices.

For larger-volume shippers, FTL or “full truckload” shipping is cheaper because it means that your carrier is dedicated to your load only, and they don’t have to drive to multiple destinations to load or unload. American Freight brokers can help you find or secure FTL shipping as well as LTL. Get in touch with our team of qualified and connected brokers today!

Dry Van Trucking FAQ

What is dry freight trucking?

Where both FTL (full truck load) and LTL (less than truckload) trucking refer to the amount of product that needs to be transported, dry van trucking specifically refers to the type of freight being shipped.

What does dry freight mean?

Simply put, it is freight that cannot get wet and is non-perishable. Dry freight must be shipped in an enclosed container or other space. However, dry freight shipping is not the same as climate-controlled shipping, as it does not require temperature control to keep it safe.

Why are trailers called dry vans?

Because a trailer is a container which keeps the items inside it totally dry. This can cause confusion for some shippers, thinking that a relatively small vehicle (a minivan but larger) is going to be used to haul their freight. But this is not the case.

Is a dry van a box truck?

A box truck is a type of dry van. But when many of us think of box trucks, we think of a relatively small version of what can be understood under the umbrella term of “dry van.” Dry shipping can take place in containers which vary significantly in size. The variations in the size of the transporting container does affect pricing. You can talk with your dry freight trucking broker at American Freight to learn more.

What is the difference between a dry van and reefer?

The difference lies in temperature control. A reefer trailer is insulated and has the ability to maintain a constant temperature inside its walls thanks to a trailer-mounted diesel-powered generator. A dry van doesn’t have this.

Why is a dry van one of the most secure types of shipments?

Because a dry van only allows access through one or two doors, and can be locked against access. Solid walls also ensure that your freight is contained and cannot fall off during transport. Whether you’re shipping your goods for long distances or short, one of the best and most economical ways to keep things safe is through the use of a dry van.
