“Here are my simple-yet-often-unmet expectations from a freight broker: 1) Know your shipper 2) Know your receiver 3) Know your freight 4) Know what equipment is needed to move it. …[the] AFI agent I worked with…met and exceeded my expectations on all four counts. I tip my hat.”

“I got in touch…after dealing with some freight haulers that would not take the time to deal with a small non-profit with a difficult task to perform. …[AFI] researched a solution and was able to give me a quote within 24hrs. With flatbed trucking there are a variety of trailer types that are designed to fit any load. There are 7 common flatbed trailer types for both LTL and truckload shipping:
So what do you have to haul? We can connect you with the trailer to handle it.
Any item which is too large to fit into a dry van container. Examples include:
Because of their flexibility, there are many loads that can be hauled on a flatbed and many companies that haul flatbed loads. If you’re looking for a Dallas flatbed trucking company near you, we’d be happy to help.
Flatbed trucking refers to the type of trailer used to haul a shipment. Some flatbed trailers are commonly used for heavy haul and oversized loads due to the multiple types of trailers and variations available. Loads that do not fit in a dry van will be hauled on flatbed trailers.
On the outside, a curtain van looks much like a dry van. But its side walls are retractable (hence the term curtain). This allows for easy side access to freight, meaning that long freight can be shipped in the dry and easily unloaded without the use of forklifts that can fit inside the trailer.
The name says it all. This is a flatbed trailer which can extend in either the lengthwise or widthwise dimension to allow hauling over-dimensional (OD) freight such as heavy construction equipment, dump trucks, or extremely long poles. Specialty flatbeds which come in multiple parts may be used for hauling items such as windmill components.
A step deck trailer has two levels: a raised level to attach to the tractor unit and a lower level to hold freight which is too tall to be carried on a standard-height flatbed. Many drop deck trailers have ramps which are used to drive freight directly onto the trailer.
This is similar to the drop deck configuration, but there is a slightly raised portion of the trailer at the rear as well as the normally raised portion at the front. This creates a well in the center where freight rides. Like standard drop deck trailers, these often have ramps to drive freight directly onboard, and they are usually employed to haul over-dimensional cargo. Double drop deck trailers, however, can generally accommodate more weight and might be used to haul particularly heavy construction vehicles.
A maxi flatbed is a flatbed trailer with increased load-bearing capacity, used to haul heavy freight which doesn’t exceed standard flatbed dimensions.
A conestoga trailer is similar to the curtain van except that the roof retracts with the sides somewhat like an accordion. This setup allows for even greater maneuverability and flexibility in loading and unloading loads that need to be kept dry during shipping.
Certain flatbed trailers (ie curtain vans and conestogas) are able to keep the elements out while still allowing goods to be loaded and unloaded easily from the side rather than the end of a dry van. For loads that are oversize, tarps may be used.
